Project Overview

Rally’s client is working on a capital plan recognizing bottleneck areas of the mill in need of upgrades to achieve production targets. Following conversion of six motors from DC to AC current supply, Phase 2 involved further modifications and improvement to the existing electrical substation room to allow for future installation of additional motor control centers (MCCs) and variable frequency drives (VFDs).

HVAC Units

Two HVAC units had been specified by Rally during Phase 1 of the project. For Phase 2, the client decided to purchase two identical units to replace the aging ones, which would not have been suitable to handle the additional heat load generated by the new VFDs. Engineering services were required to design all building modifications, piping services and ductwork required to accommodate the new units.

Scope of Work

  • Electrical substation room modifications to accommodate new VFDs, building upgrades and design of foundations for two new HVAC units. This included modifications to masonry walls and concrete slab
  • Process: Updates of piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) for new HVAC piping and development of line designation tables (LDTs).
  • Piping: Demolition / relocation of existing services and tie-ins of new HVAC equipment.
  • Mechanical/HVAC: Design of ductwork for new HVAC equipment.
